Deux écoles catholiques bilingues francophones d’Alexandrie Saint-Marc et Sainte-Jeanne-Antide : un état des lieux 2019

Abstract

Quelle est la spécificité des écoles catholiques bilingues francophones en Egypte ? Par ce mémoire, nous nous sommes risqués à répondre à cette question, en commençant par en relater l’histoire, évoquant les origines concomitantes et corolaires des écoles catholiques et de la langue française. Nous avons aussi donné une définition abstraite de ces écoles, dans le contexte scolaire égyptien francophone. Mais surtout, basés sur de nombreux témoignages, et sur deux écoles en particulier (une de garçons, une de filles), nous avons voulu en présenter l’esprit, l’inertie des traditions, les atouts, les défis et les solutions, en mettant en avant la perception que ces écoles ont d’elles-mêmes, via leurs professeurs, les parents, et leurs anciens élèves. Le travail aurait été inachevé, sans aborder la communauté des anciens élèves, dans leurs rapports à la langue française et à leur ancienne école.

What is the particularity of the catholic French-speaking schools in Egypt ? Through this study, we ventured to answer this question, beginning with their long history, dealing with the concomitant and collorary origins of catholic schools and French language. We gave an abstract definition of these schools, in the French-speaking Egyptian scolar system. But most of all, based on many records, and on two schools in particular (one for boys, one for girls), we wanted to present the spirit, the inertia of the traditions, the assets, the challenges and the solutions, putting forward the perception that these schools have about themselves, according to their teachers, the parents and their alumni. The work would not have been complete, without talking about the alumni community, within their relations to the French language and their former school.
