Résumé: | We examine the relevance of information sharing policies and their effects On the reduction of the level of non-performing loans in 29 African countries, more precisely those with intermediate income, for the 2004-2020 period. Public credit registers (PCR) and private credit bureaus (BPC) are used as surrogates to reduce Information asymmetry, while nonperforming loans are assessed through the ratio of non-performing loans out of the total loans granted by a bank and during a year precise. The empirical evidence is based on the generalized method of moments, this last specified around the respective tests of Hausen and Arellano-Bover. The following findings are established: First, PCRs and PCBs have negative on the level of non-performing loans, the magnitude of the former being substantially higher, because African countries have more PCR than PCBs, this shows that the commissioning of credit reference bureaus and registers reduces the level of non-performing loans and similarly improves the financial performance of banks; second, the bank size has a significant positive effect on changes in the level of receivables doubtful, so it will be important for banks as they evolve to increase macro-prudential measures in order to avoid an increase in their provisions for losses. We therefore recommend that all African countries acquire credit assessment agencies (SIR) in order to stabilize and improve their banking environment with a view to financial development. |
