Résumé: | Despite numerous awareness campaigns about early sexuality in schools, the phenomenon of early parenthood has grown over the years and become more widespread. This trend poses significant risks to girls' education and health. In response, the Minister of Secondary Education issued a circular on April 22, 2022, regarding the management of early pregnancies in public and private secondary educational institutions in Cameroon. However, this circular has sparked controversy within the educational community due to skepticism among stakeholders. The overall objective of this study is to understand and explain the controversies surrounding the circular on "the management of early pregnancies in schools." We conducted fundamental research with an explanatory approach, using a mixed-methods methodology. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews, direct observation, and a closed-ended questionnaire. Content analysis and multiple-choice factor analysis were used for data analysis. Findings from the study, based on data collected from 100 students and 14 respondents, reveal several issues related to the circular: 1. “Lack of Implementation Support”: The circular was introduced without sufficient accompanying resources for its implementation within the educational community. 2. “Divisive Nature of Early Pregnancy Management”: The management of early pregnancies raises questions related to public health, morality, and social exclusion. These issues contribute to the controversy surrounding the circular. In conclusion, the circular needs better support and material resources to effectively address the psychosocial needs of pregnant students and ensure practical implementation. |
