Résumé: Pain is a disease that affects the world population and each individual suffers from pain at least once in his life. To avoid the adverse effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), some people use medicinal plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic and ulcerogenic effects of aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa in mice. Acute pain was induced by an intra-peritoneal injection of acetic acid (0.6%) and injection under the plantar arch of formalin (2.5%). For ulcerogenic test, the effect of the aqueous extract Eremomastax speciosa on the gastric mucosa was observed five hours after administration of different treatments. For each of these tests animals were divided into five groups of six animals each and treated with distilled water and indomethacin for the control groups and the aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa at doses of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg for the test groups. Hence, The aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa dose dependently reduced the number of abdominal contractions induced by intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid, with 12.3%; 48.4% and 91.8% of inhibition percentages respectively for doses 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg ; decrease significant at doses 200mg/kg (p<0.01) and 400mg/kg (p<0.001). This was accompanied by a decrease (p <0.001) in the time of licking and lifting of the leg in all groups compared to the control (distilled water) during the second phase of the pain induced by formalin. The aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa did not cause gastric ulcer unlike indomethacin which has caused with 2.97 ulcer index. Unlike indomethacin that inhibited the secretion of mucus, the aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa at doses 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg have induced an increase in mucus secretion. The aqueous extract of Eremomastax speciosa would therefore possess analgesic and non-ulcerogenic properties.
